The Niles Intermediate School was the first recipient of school supplies donated as a result of the Spano Foundation’s School Supplies Fund this past January.
Pictured is Kristin Pishott, a teacher at Niles Intermediate School, along with some students who are receiving the supplies that were distributed among grades 3-5 and will help more than 100 students in need.
The School Supplies Fund was established by the Spano Foundation of Youngstown, Ohio, in 2016 to help primary and secondary school teachers, students and communities to help purchase much-needed classroom supplies for their underprivileged students.

The children are the ones who feel the impact of poverty the most … at home and at school during these times. Many families are unable to afford the much-needed school supplies to help their young ones succeed. And many school systems no longer have the budgets to provide teachers and their students with many of the most basic classroom needs.
“Supporting education is a strong focus for the Spano Foundation,” Anthony Spano, Executive Director of the Anthony V. Spano Foundation stated, “and we are proud to partner with Staples Advantage and the OEA Educational Foundation to help fulfill some of Niles’ Intermediate School needs for grades 3-5. Our goal, through the School Supplies Fund, is to help bridge the gap between the school budget cuts and the families who are struggling to provide the supplies.”
Richard Sprague, NEA President stated “The Niles Education Association would like to thank the Spano Foundation for the donations to the Niles Intermediate School. These supplies aided lessons that could not have been performed for students who could not afford such supplies. They will now have those items for their use throughout the school year. We would like to say thank you for caring about the needs of others.”
The NIS Teachers also thanked the Spano Foundation stating “It is so important for our students to have the necessary tools in order to start their day ready to learn. Your generosity is much appreciated, and our students were so excited to receive the much needed supplies for everyday use.”
